There are many pizza joints in New York City that finding the best pizza or the best slice is a seemingly impossible endeavor. Sure, some say Joe’s Pizza–which is a Greenwich Village institution that has been offering NY style slices for over 35 years now–but the debate over which pizzeria serves the best pie or slice is unending. Every year, there are numerous pizza places that join our “go-to pizza” list, some of which deviate from the Neapolitan (round) pie.

Prince St Pizza and Emmy Squared are two famous restaurants that serve square pizza (and are killing the square game!). Prince St makes Sicilian pies which are essentially Foccacia with toppings, while Emmy Squared makes Detroit-style pizza that can pass as a deep dish pizza. Both of them are situated in Downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn and can be quite a trip for those who live in different boroughs. Luckily in December 2018, the Upper West Side gained its own icon—Mama’s Too.

Mama’s Too is a small counter-service pizzeria that offers both Neapolitan and Sicilian style pizza, though its owner Frank loves to concoct unprecedented flavors in squares. Its Square Pepperoni Pizza is a crowd favorite and a strong contender of its parallel from Prince St. Thank God, they’re in separate neighborhoods.

My personal favorite is the Pear Gorgonzola. This white pizza perfectly achieves the weird yet exceptional (when done right) combo of creamy and sweet. It’s as if this slice came from a perfectly curated cheese platter served to the Royals.

Other notable flavors are Vodka, Cacio e Pepe, and Potato and Rosemary. The availability of flavors changes everyday. So if you’re hungry or have other tummies to feed, get a slice of each available flavor!

Keep in mind that this place is tiny and crowded the majority of the time. But it is definitely worth the wait! Grab a slice (or 2) when you find yourself in the UWS or Museum of Natural History.
